About the museum
The Money Museum is the museum and visitor centre of the Hungarian National Bank, operated by MNB-EduLab Nonprofit Kft. It does not only show old coins and the history of money: the exhibition, accompanied by interactive games and spectacular visual presentations, is an experience centre for financial knowledge and an important Hungarian workshop for financial education in schools.
The permanent exhibition “Pénz útja” (The Path of Money) is not based on traditional, static museum displays but on individual experience. Around fifty installations and numerous games help visitors to learn about the history, functioning, and cultural and economic significance of money; the collection is one of the most interesting numismatic holdings in Hungary. The visit begins in the Aranybánya (Gold Mine), where an interactive digital knowledge bank presents the economic, cultural and sacral uses of gold.
The exhibition is organised around the five functions of money: the unit of account, the medium of exchange, the means of payment, world money and the store of value, each of which has its own node. Museum education sessions on financial topics are held for school groups of all major age groups.
