About the museum
In 1853 Jókai Mór and his wife, Laborfalvi Róza, bought a plot on Svábhegy, an abandoned quarry together with the house standing on it. The writer replaced the dense scrub with vines and fruit trees, planted lime, maple, chestnut and walnut trees as windbreaks against the wind, and laid out a small ornamental garden around the house. The grape harvests on Svábhegy were important events of literary life, and the garden became a centre of the intellectual life of the time.
After Jókai's death the garden changed hands and gradually fell into neglect, and the summer house had to be demolished because of its dilapidated condition. The area was later replanted with fruit trees, a rose garden and vines. Since 1975 the Jókai-kert has been a protected natural area of national importance, and since 2007 a protected historic garden.
In the garden's former wine-press house is the memorial room of the Petőfi Literary Museum. The exhibition presents the relationship between the writer and nature: as a gardener Jókai was also proud of his fruit trees, vines and birds, and he shared his experiences with his readers in his novels and popular science writings.
