About the museum
Berzsenyi Dániel was born on 7 May 1776 in Egyházashetye, into a noble family of Kemenesalja. His birthplace is the Baroque mansion built around 1750, on whose wall the first memorial plaque was placed in 1876, on the 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth. Since then Egyházashetye has been the oldest and best-known literary memorial site of Vas County and the centre of the Berzsenyi cult.
The exhibition of the memorial museum recalls the poet’s childhood and youth, his early married years in Sömjén, and above all the sources of his poetry: the landscapes around Kis-Somlyó and the historic atmosphere of the region. In the room and the kitchen some of his everyday objects, family furniture, books, pictures and other documents can be seen. One room of the building houses the village library. The memorial museum is maintained by the local government of the village.
