About the museum
Construction of the Ikervár hydroelectric plant began in 1896, and the plant started operating on 31 December 1896. Its designer was the astronomer and engineer Gothard Jenő; the investment was carried out by the Vasmegyei Elektromos Művek Rt. (Vas County Electric Works Ltd.), founded in 1895, under the leadership of Count Batthyány Ferenc. The dynamo and turbines were ordered from Switzerland, and one of the original turbines can still be seen in the machine hall. The dam is six kilometres from the plant on the Rába; water is led to the plant by a canal.
The plant supplied electricity for, among other things, the street lighting of Sárvár and Szombathely, and from 1900 the railway station in Sopron. The plant was converted to alternating current in 1925, modernised with Swedish turbines and generators in 1995, and renovated in 2012.
The upper-floor museum presents the history of the plant, the old water mills, smaller local hydroelectric plants and flood protection; a separate room shows the history of water-power use from antiquity to the present, with a model of a ship mill and remains of water-mill machinery. Further sections deal with green energy (solar and wind power) and the wildlife of the Rába.
