About the museum
The Ság-hegy is a basalt butte formed by volcanic activity about five million years ago. Nearly fifty years of mining transformed it; since 1975 the whole area has been under nature protection and is part of the Sághegyi Tájvédelmi Körzet (Ság Hill Landscape Protection Area). A geological nature trail leads through the crater formed in the quarry.
The visitor centre of the Kemenes Vulkánpark presents the volcanism of the Earth, the volcanoes of the Carpathian Basin and Hungary, and the local Ság-hegy on nearly a thousand square metres. The exhibition consists of interactive elements, simulators and touch screens, and a 17-minute short film is shown in its cinema room. The locomotives and carriages displayed in the park's outdoor railway collection can be viewed free of charge every day of the year.
