About the museum
The Nádasdy Ferenc Múzeum was founded in 1951 on the initiative of Sárvár. It is named after Nádasdy III. Ferenc, the Lord Chief Justice (országbíró), who was executed in 1671 for taking part in the Wesselényi conspiracy. The museum began its operation in the fresco-decorated grand hall of the castle and in four rooms connected to it.
Today the exhibitions are displayed on the three upper-floor wings and in the tower of the pentagonal castle of Sárvár, on nearly 1,300 square metres. Inscriptions and an audio guide help visitors through the history of the castle, the frescoes of the hall and the units of the permanent exhibition.
A special feature of the museum is its internationally known hussar exhibition, which presents the legacy of the Nádasdy hussars and several other Hungarian hussar regiments. The painted salons guide visitors through the changes in furniture styles, while the map collection follows the cartographic depiction of Hungary from the 16th century onwards. The stairs in the tower lead to a painted rest room, and from the upper tower room there is a view of the town and the castle park.
