About the museum
The founder of the collection is Bozsó János (1922–1998), painter and art collector from Kecskemét. In the late 1950s he moved into the old house on Klapka utca, which served as his studio and where his passion for collecting art was born. At first he looked for peasant utensils at the flea market for his still lifes; later, alongside saving ethnographic objects, he began to collect the values of European applied art.
In 1976 he signed a bequest agreement with his home town, and in 1979 the first permanent exhibition opened. The former studio, an 18th-century house, has been extended over the decades with new wings.
Visitors can now see the ethnographic collection in the 18th-century part of the building, the church-art exhibition, the European applied-art material and a selection of paintings by Bozsó János. The institution is an important player in the cultural life of Kecskemét and also organises temporary exhibitions and museum-education sessions.
