About the museum
The manor house in Söjtör was originally begun by the county as a military billet. When the walls were already standing, Deák Ferenc’s grandfather, Deák Gábor, bought it in 1768 and completed the building; later the house, converted into a noble manor, was taken over by Deák Ferenc’s father.
The wall paintings were probably already commissioned by the parents of Deák Ferenc and his wife. In the south-western corner room, portraits of chieftains were uncovered in 2002, which had been painted after the illustrations of a book published in Nuremberg in 1664 with the support of Judge Royal Nádasdy Ferenc; in the north-eastern corner room, landscape scenes came to light. The building underwent a complete listed-monument renovation in 1975, and again for the 200th anniversary of Deák Ferenc’s birth.
The sturdy building, shaped around 1770, its painted walls and the reconstructed kitchen, which recalls the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, are a unique testimony to the way of life of the Zala lesser nobility. In the rooms upstairs, period furniture and a chamber exhibition present the reading culture of the lesser nobility.
