About the museum

The Magyar Olajipari Múzeum (Hungarian Oil Industry Museum) is a specialist museum with a national collecting remit, founded in 1969 to collect, process and present, in its exhibitions and publications, more than a hundred years of the history of Hungary's hydrocarbon industry. In 1993 it took over the Zsigmondy Vilmos Collection; since then it has also collected and preserved the historical relics of water mining alongside those of the hydrocarbon industry.

In Zalaegerszeg, next to the Göcseji Falumúzeum, the museum's permanent open-air exhibition covers 30,000 square metres, where visitors encounter the technical relics of the hydrocarbon industry: mining, processing and transport. The permanent exhibition halls explain the technological processes and history of the industry, and the oil industry sculpture park contains busts of outstanding technical specialists.

The exhibitions include the open-air technical heritage exhibition, an exhibition on the tools of water mining, a mineral and rock exhibition, an industrial demonstration exhibition, and an exhibition on the lives of Zsigmondy Vilmos and Zsigmondy Béla. The museum's collections, and a small exhibition set up in memory of the geologist Papp Simon, are in the building on Wlassics Gyula utca.
