About the museum
The Göcseji Múzeum preserves the past of Zalaegerszeg and Zala County. Teachers at the grammar school had been collecting ethnographic objects since 1907, and the first permanent ethnographic exhibition opened in autumn 1953. The neo-baroque building on Batthyány Lajos utca underwent a major renovation between 2018 and 2022.
The building is the seat of the Zalaegerszegi Múzeumok Igazgatósága (Zalaegerszeg Museums Directorate). The permanent exhibitions present the town's history from the 13th to the 20th century, the oeuvre of ceramic artist Németh János and sculptor Kisfaludi Strobl Zsigmond, the works of interior architect and applied artist Fekete György, the memory of the victims of communism, and the 18th- to 20th-century clock collection of watchmaker Preisz József.
