About the museum
The Solymár local history collection operates as part of the Apáczai Csere János Művelődési Ház és Könyvtár (Apáczai Csere János Cultural Centre and Library), and is maintained by the local government of Solymár. In 2022 it celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation, and it strives to become a visitor-friendly, modern museum. In 2024 it was a nominee for the Év Múzeuma (Museum of the Year) award, and it received a special prize from the Vidéki Múzeumok Szövetsége (Rural Museums Association) for strengthening local identity and tourism.
The exhibition consists of several parts: in the barn, the agricultural machines and household objects of the village are on view (threshing machine, carts, sledge, wine press, plough, seed drill); below it, the stone collection of Roman-era grave stones, altar stones and a Neptune stone found in the fields, as well as architectural fragments from the medieval castle. The Solymár ethnography section presents the lives of the Serbian settlers (rác) who came after the Ottoman occupation, and then of the German settlers from the Schwarzwald and Fulda regions; the Swabian room was handed over in renovated form in September 2026, on village day. The archaeological section surveys the village’s past from the end of the Copper Age through the Bronze Age to the Roman period, and two further rooms show the grocery shop of the Vermes family and an Art Nouveau pharmacy.
