About the museum
The Nagy Imre Emlékház is housed in an old villa building, where Nagy Imre lived between 1949 and 1956. The building was designed by Kozma Lajos; today it belongs to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The memorial house commemorates the martyred prime minister of the 1956 revolution and War of Independence, who was executed in 1958.
The renovation of the exhibition and of the whole building was completed in 2008. The exhibition presents the life and work of Nagy Imre with period objects, newsreels and photographs, as well as his rehabilitation, his reburial and the reinterpretation of his person.
The exhibition can be divided into two large parts: on the one hand the everyday life of the house and Nagy Imre's private life, on the other hand the history of 1956. The exhibition is conducted by a historian-museologist staff member, and an audio guide is also available in Hungarian and English.
