About the museum
The Elektrotechnikai Gyűjtemény is housed in the building of a 30/10 kV transformer station, which operated from 1934 until the end of the 1960s. The building was constructed in the early modern and Art Deco style, with a reinforced concrete frame, two storeys and a U-shaped floor plan. The Art Deco patterned terrazzo floor of the staircase was made to a patent by Dénes Györgyi, and the walls are covered with green glazed Zsolnay tiles.
The station closed when the capital's basic network was switched from 30 kV to 120 kV. In 1975 the building became home to a branch of the museum; since 1987 it has been listed as an industrial monument.
The exhibition presents the development of electrical engineering and its historical curiosities. It focuses on the Hungarian electricity industry and also covers lighting technology, domestic electrical appliances and railway electrification.
