About the museum
The Földalatti Vasúti Múzeum (Underground Railway Museum) preserves the memory of the Millennium Underground, opened in 1896, the first underground railway on the continent. It opened in 1975, on the hundredth anniversary of the start of the underground, and was renewed in 1996. The museum operates in the Deák Ferenc tér underpass.
The exhibition takes place in one of the original tunnel sections of the Millennium Underground, which was taken out of service in 1955 when the East–West metro was built. Alongside the carriages, models, documents and photographs, the walls themselves create an authentic historical atmosphere. In the front area of the museum, the original “Gizella tér” sign of the central terminus can be seen, with Zsolnay tile cladding; a marble plaque recalls that Ferenc József travelled on the underground with his entourage on 8 May 1896.
The exhibition presents three original carriages, vehicle numbers 19, 1 and 81, which were lifted onto the tracks by crane in 1975. In the display cases opposite, objects, design drawings, maps, a construction log, photographs and models tell the story of the underground railway from its construction to the present day, and the closing section deals with metro construction.
