About the museum
The decision to found the Evangélikus Országos Múzeum (Lutheran National Museum) was taken by the National Presbytery of the Lutheran Church of Hungary in December 1972; work began on 1 January 1973 under the leadership of church historian Fabiny Tibor. The timing was linked to the commemoration of the 1523 law of the Diet of Buda that persecuted the Lutherans. The museum collects, researches and presents artworks and monuments owned by Lutheran churches and institutions. Its field covers the history of Lutheran churches, schools and congregations as well as church ethnography.
In 2017 the Evangélikus Országos Gyűjtemény (Lutheran National Collection) was created by integrating the archive, the library and the museum. The museum is located on Deák tér, in the historic complex of the Pest Lutheran congregation, the so-called Lutheran island.
The permanent exhibition Luther öröksége opened on 11 November 2016. Through around three hundred and fifty objects and interactive digital applications, it presents the Lutherans of the Carpathian Basin. The Sztehlo–Keken memorial room recreates a Second World War air-raid shelter, while the Fébé exhibition traces the history of the Fébé Lutheran Deaconess Association between 1924 and 1951.
