About the museum
The castle, standing on the steep volcanic cone of Várhegy in the Zemplén Mountains, was built at the beginning of the 13th century, which makes it one of the earliest stone castles in the country. Its name is first mentioned in a papal document of 1264, and a Friesach denarius found there also proves that it existed before the Mongol invasion. From the end of the 14th century it was owned by the Perényi family, who built extensively on it in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1526, after the coronation of Szapolyai János, Perényi Péter, Keeper of the Crown, took the Szent Korona (Holy Crown of Hungary) to Füzér, where it remained for almost a year. The major renovation between 2014 and 2016 built the Lower Castle and renewed the castle chapel, the palace wing and the lower bastion of the Upper Castle; a second construction phase began in 2019.
