About the museum
Gárdonyi Géza, then still called Ziegler Géza, was born in this building on 3 August 1863. As a young journalist he changed his name to Gárdonyi, because he had been baptised in Gárdony. The house once stood among servants’ quarters, a school, the steward’s house, a well and the neighbouring Szent Anna chapel.
The building has been a museum since 1963; the town administration had it renovated, and since 2007 it has operated as a literary memorial house. Visitors can learn about the writer’s working method, his cipher and the story of how it was deciphered.
The memorial house consists of five rooms. The first presents his life with original documents and personal objects; the second is a kitchen furnished with period equipment; the third recalls his literary work, including his notebook (mesterfüzet), drawings and the first page of Egri csillagok (Stars of Eger). Next door, a log-built replica of the castle of Eger, recalling the setting of Egri csillagok, was completed in the summer of 2011.
