About the museum
The Alumíniumipari Múzeum (Aluminium Industry Museum) was founded in 1975 and is today a branch institution of the Magyar Műszaki és Közlekedési Múzeum (Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport). Its collection preserves the material memorabilia, photographs, and technical and history-of-technology documents of the Hungarian aluminium industry, and to a lesser extent of international aluminium companies. It is the only museum in Europe connected with aluminium.
The permanent exhibitions present bauxite prospecting and mining, alumina production, aluminium metallurgy, and research and design work across eleven rooms. Original aluminium objects from the 1930s, measuring instruments, sampling equipment, scale models of transport machines, 1950s miners' clothing and a replica of the aluminium food container of the astronaut Farkas Bertalan can also be seen.
Visitors can also walk through a tunnel imitating the entrance to a bauxite mine, where they can get to know characteristic hand tools. The museum also presents everyday uses of aluminium, as well as sculptures, plaques and coins made of aluminium.
