About the museum
The Kerka Water Mill is one of Hungary’s outstanding industrial monuments. A water mill on the Kerka is mentioned as early as 1541; the present building took its Baroque form in the early 1700s. In the 19th century it stood on the estate of the Andrássy family and operated continuously until its nationalisation in 1952. Later it received electric lighting and electric turbines, but after 1963 it stopped, because the water of the Kerka was artificially diverted.
For decades the building fell into ruin; in 2002 the Kerka Vízimalom Egyesület (Kerka Water Mill Association) bought it and began its restoration as a monument, which was completed by 2006. Further developments under an EU-supported project for the cultural and industrial-historical restoration of the Andrássy–Szapáry Water Mill and its surroundings took place until 2022. The building now functions as an exhibition space, preserving its earlier form; the mill also operates as child-friendly accommodation.
