About the museum
Between the two world wars, Primorci and Istrani moved from Slovene and Croatian Istria and from Primorska to Prekmurje. According to the society, the migrations took place between 1921 and 1932, when about 1,300 Primorci and Istrani were settled in the south-eastern part of Prekmurje, among other things to balance the ethnic composition of the population. During the Second World War the Hungarian authorities dispersed them again, and about 600 of them were interned in the Sárvár camp.
The Društvo Primorci in Istrani v Prekmurju (Primorci and Istrani in Prekmurje Society), founded in 2010, set up the museum, which recalls the wooden barracks of 1922, the houses of the first settlers when the Benica colony was founded. The museum opened in 2012. It presents the short and varied history and life of the Primorci who settled in Prekmurje; a guide through the collection can be Stanko Bensa, author of the book “Od Soče do Mure” (From the Soča to the Mura).
