About the museum
Lendava Castle (Dolnja Lendava) stands on the site of a fortress that probably existed already before the 12th century. In the second half of the 12th century it was one of 19 fortresses on the estate of the Hahót-Buzád family; the oldest known written source about the place is a deed of gift from 1192. The Hahót family, later the Bánffy of Dolnja Lendava, belonged for three centuries to the most distinguished Hungarian noble families. In 1366 King Louis I granted Lendava market rights.
The castle was renovated and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Today it houses the public institute Galerija-Muzej Lendava, which combines museum and gallery activity. It also organises the Mednarodna likovna kolonija Lendava (International Art Colony Lendava), which has taken place since 1973, and since 2005 it has kept alive the old sculptural technique of bronze casting.
The collections are displayed in the castle: an ethnological exhibition on Lendava and its surroundings, an exhibition on the culture of Hetés folk textiles, a lapidarium with sacral heritage, the memorial rooms of the sculptor György Zala and the graphic artist Štefan Galič, and a collection of small bronze sculpture. The museum's branch at Glavna ulica 52 shows the burgher life, printing and umbrella-making of Lendava.
