Középkori Zsidó Imaház

About the museum

The prayer house at Táncsics Mihály utca 26 is on the ground floor of a residential building. The exhibition space commemorates the medieval and early modern Jewish community of Buda. The community settled in Buda under King IV Béla, during the rebuilding after the Mongol invasion; by the middle of the 15th century it had moved to the northern part of the town, to Zsidó utca (Jewish Street), which ran where Táncsics Mihály utca is today. The members of the community could return in the middle of the 16th century, even under Ottoman rule, but in 1686 the recapture of Buda ended the community's presence.

On the vault of the hall, painted figures with Hebrew inscriptions were discovered in 1964, during the restoration after the Second World War. Among them is a Star of David with the priestly blessing, and a bow (íj) with the prayer of Hanna. The painting on the walls and vault, which is still visible today, gives the prayer house its special atmosphere.

The exhibition panels present the life of the Jewish community of medieval and Ottoman-period Buda. The exhibition space also displays architectural fragments of the synagogue discovered on the neighbouring plot no. 23, and a collection of tombstones. The building is also used by the Egységes Magyarországi Izraelita Hitközség as the Budavári Zsinagóga (Buda Castle Synagogue).
