About the museum

The Nagyboldogasszony Church in Buda Castle, commonly known as the Mátyás-templom (Matthias Church), stands on Szentháromság Square. The earliest reference to the building’s construction dates from 1247. In the church, known as the coronation church, Károly Róbert was crowned king in 1309, I. Ferenc József and Erzsébet in 1867, and IV. Károly and Zita in 1916. Between 1873 and 1896 the church was rebuilt under Schulek Frigyes, and it was reconsecrated in 1896.

In 1964, the parish priest Tóth János set up an ecclesiastical-art museum in the church to present its ecclesiastical art collection. The exhibition begins in the medieval lower church and ends at St Stephen’s Chapel.

The collection includes relics of numerous saints, medieval stone carvings, and replicas of the Holy Crown and the coronation jewels. The interior of the church is itself a sight: the western façade bears a Zsolnay pyrogranite relief of Mary, and the Gothic rose window restored by Schulek is one of the most famous features of the church.
