About the museum
The Zenetörténeti Múzeum (Museum of Music History) operates in Táncsics Mihály utca and is part of the Zenetudományi Intézet (Institute of Musicology) of the HUN-REN Bölcsészettudományi Kutatóközpont (HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities). The museum's task is the research of instrument history (organology), and the collection, processing and publication of Hungarian and European music-history documents: manuscripts, letters, pictures, instruments and estates.
The institution also deals with musical iconographic research, and records and observes the state-owned master instruments. The collection's material is also available in the MúzeumDigitár database.
The exhibition rooms show instruments, a 20th-century violin-making workshop and Hungarian master violins, bows, medals and badges, as well as the Lajtha László memorial room. The museum regularly holds concerts; before most concerts an exhibition tour takes place an hour in advance.
