About the museum
The Országos Lengyel Kisebbségi Önkormányzat (National Polish Minority Self-Government) founded the museum in Kőbánya, Budapest, in 1998; initially it was called the Magyarországi Lengyelség Múzeuma és Levéltára (Museum and Archive of Polishness in Hungary). Since 2016 it has been called the Lengyel Kutatóintézet és Múzeum (Polish Research Institute and Museum). Its main research areas are the thousand-year history of Hungarian–Polish relations and the history of Poles in Hungary. The collection is continuously growing, and the greatest support for this comes from the Hungarian and Polish states.
With Hungarian and Polish state support, the museum building was extended with a storey in 2005–2006, and the collection grew considerably at that time. In 2011 the permanent exhibition was supplemented with modern visual tools. Since 2006 the museum has published trilingual catalogues for its temporary exhibitions, and since 2003 it has been a member of the International Conference of Polish Museums, Archives and Libraries Abroad.
The permanent exhibition “A magyar–lengyel kapcsolatok ezer éve” (A Thousand Years of Hungarian–Polish Relations) presents in five chapters the royal and state relations, the memory of the Poles who took part in the 1848–49 revolution, economic and cultural relations, and the life of the Polish community in Hungary, including a furnished peasant parlour from Derenk. The museum has two rural branches in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County.
