About the museum
Fire-fighting equipment was already on display in several private collections in Hungary in the early 19th century; the first firefighting museum was set up by the Budapest Volunteer Fire Brigade. The early collections were destroyed in the war and in the metal collection drives that followed. The collecting work that began under the 1954 Act on the protection of technical heritage created the material of the Tűzoltó Múzeum (Fire Museum), founded in 1955 with a national collecting remit.
The permanent exhibition opened in 1957 and has been renewed several times since. On the ground-floor corridor, old fire appliances such as stork-necked hand pumps (gólyanyakú fecskendők), a steam pump, a horse-drawn petrol-engine pump, a trolley-mounted pump and a turbojet fire-extinguishing machine greet the visitor. The upstairs rooms present, in chronological order, fire protection in prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages, the founding of the first fire brigades, the development of fire-fighting appliances and technology, and the life and traditions of firefighters.
The museum’s display storeroom, the Tűzoltó Skanzen (Fire Brigade Open-Air Museum), opened in 2020 in the courtyard of the Újpest fire station. Visiting the museum is recommended from the age of 6.
