Népi Iparművészeti Gyűjtemény

Folk applied-arts collection in Kecskemét, in a former brewhouse: woodcarving, pottery, embroidery, weaving and small crafts.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 1,000 Partially accessible

About the museum

The Folk Applied Arts Collection is housed in a brewhouse and distillery that Kecskemét’s town magistracy built in 1793 to supplement its income. The construction was entrusted to the Pest carpenter master József Hacker, and brewing began on 1 August 1793 under master János Petz. The complex originally also included a dry mill, a stable for the oxen that carried the beer, and a granary.

After brewing ceased to be profitable, the building was converted and extended. From 1875 to 1896 it was a barracks; in 1917 the town’s spirits distillery was established here, whose apricot brandy (barackpálinka) became famous in 1935 and whose bugaci keserű (bitter) in 1941. From 1969 to 1981 the bottling plant of the Budapest Liqueur Industry Company operated here.

In 1981 the building was returned to the town council, and then, with the commitment of Bács-Kiskun County and the town council and wide social cooperation, it was transformed into the Magyar Népi Iparművészeti Múzeum (Hungarian Folk Applied Arts Museum). It was handed over for its present purpose on 7 December 1984. The permanent exhibition presents the five main branches of folk applied art.
