About the museum
In 1994, during the restoration of the Domonkos templom (Dominican church) in Vác, builders came upon the entrance to the crypt beneath the church, which had been walled up for more than 150 years. In the crypt, 262 mostly well-preserved, decorated coffins held the mortal remains of citizens of Vác from the mid-18th century and the early 19th century, which had spontaneously mummified because of the special climate.
The permanent exhibition, renovated in June 2016, is housed in the medieval cellar of a house on the main square. The visitor is greeted by the image of the crypt and a list of the citizens of Vác identified from the coffin inscriptions; in the small room are sacred objects found in the coffins, such as crucifixes and rosaries. In the large room, painted adult and child coffins are displayed; at the back of the room a tailor, a townswoman and a nine-year-old girl rest in reconstructed costume, in glass coffins.
