Szent Mihály Altemplom

Archaeological exhibition in the middle of Vác's main square, in the crypt of the former Szent Mihály church, with the uncovered remains of the church and its cemetery.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 600

About the museum

The renovation of Március 15. tér was preceded by a thorough archaeological excavation, during which the ruins of the former German quarter, of the Szent Mihály church, which had been rebuilt many times, and valuable finds such as carved gravestones came to light. The exhibition is in the crypt of the former Szent Mihály church.

Already at the time of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin there was a settlement on today's main square of Vác, and in the 11th–12th centuries a presumably modest church was built here; only a few of its excavated graves survive. After the Mongol invasion, in the second half of the 13th century, Germans moved into this part of town, and on the site of the old church they established the Szent Mihály church and its cemetery, which are first mentioned in a charter in 1319.

The church was completely rebuilt and enlarged at the end of the 14th or in the 15th century, and several smaller rebuildings followed until the mid-16th century. The Ottomans first occupied Vác in 1544 and were finally driven out in 1685.
