About the museum
The Munkácsy Mihály Múzeum in Békéscsaba is the county museum of Békés County. It was founded in 1899 by the Békéscsabai Múzeumi Egyesület (Békéscsaba Museum Association). The crown jewel of its collection is the unit of Munkácsy Mihály’s oeuvre kept in Békéscsaba: some ten paintings and as many graphic works, as well as a continuously growing body of relics, which currently numbers 579 items.
The permanent exhibitions of the house, as part of the series “utazás TÉRben és IDŐben” (“Journey in Space and Time”), present the oeuvre of Munkácsy, the history of Békéscsaba and its folk life from the settlement of the Slovaks in 1718 until today, the archaeological remains of the region from the Neolithic to the end of the Rákóczi War of Independence, and the natural conditions of Békés County. The archaeological collection preserves around six hundred thousand objects.
The museum stands in the city centre on the bank of the Élővíz-csatorna (Élővíz Canal), near Szent István tér. It also includes the Gabonamúzeum (Grain Museum), which can be visited at a separate location at Gyulai út 65.
