About the museum
The Szlovák Tájház stands at 21 Garay utca, near the Lutheran main church. The 19th-century, classicist-style folk house is a listed monument and has a Doric-columned front porch. It was established in 1972 from objects of the Munkácsy Mihály Múzeum and material collected around Békéscsaba; until 2001 it was a permanent exhibition site of the county museum, and since then it has been run by the Slovak Local Government of Békéscsaba, a city with county rights.
The authentically furnished rooms show the lifestyle and domestic culture of a well-to-do Slovak peasant farmer, from farming implements to the furnishing of the best room (tisztaszoba). The house’s carved wooden furniture, decorated with painted flowers and bearing dates, is particularly valuable. The Tájház also includes the Áchim-terem (Áchim Hall), which hosts smaller events, exhibitions and tradition-keeping programmes.
