About the museum

The Ruszin Tájház (Rusyn Village Heritage House) in Komlóska is a listed peasant house built in the first half of the 19th century. The building follows the northern Hungarian house type characteristic of the Zemplén Mountains, with a room–pitvar–ól layout (room, hall and stable). Its walls are built on a timber frame with clay-plastered wattle panels, and its roof is covered with straw thatch.

The house has operated as a village heritage house since 1980, and presents the traditional domestic culture and way of life of the local Rusyn minority. The furnishing recalls the first decade of the 1900s. The most important room is the multi-purpose room, which was the living space of the family.

The special feature of the village heritage house is the kabolás kemence (kabolás stove) with the masina built beside it: in Hungary it has survived in its original form only here. The smoke of the stove left through a free-standing chimney in the pitvar. The room’s furnishings include two painted karosláda (chests), made in Sátoraljaújhely in 1888 and 1895, as well as a drawer table, a chest of drawers and two beds. The glass and ceramic vessels, the Sárospatak plates and the cast-iron pots recall the everyday objects of the former residents; holy pictures and family photographs hang on the walls.
