About the museum
The Sárospataki Képtár was founded in 1968 at the initiative of singer Béres Ferenc, who donated a significant part of his art collection to the town. Many artists connected with Sárospatak followed his example, so the collection grew mainly through donations. The works were first exhibited in the Rákóczi Castle and in 1976 were moved to the building on Szent Erzsébet út. It received its present name in 1980; from 1983 to 2013 it was a branch of the Herman Ottó Museum in Miskolc, and since then it has again been maintained by the town of Sárospatak.
The collection of more than two thousand works mainly represents 20th-century Hungarian art and consists of four major units: the oeuvre of sculptor Andrássy Kurta János; the oeuvre and estate of Domján József, Kossuth Prize-winning painter and graphic artist; the Béres Collection (including works by Mednyánszky László, Rippl-Rónai József, Gulácsy Lajos and Holló László); and the collection of Hungarian avant-garde art of the 1970s and 1980s.
The permanent exhibitions present the work of Andrássy Kurta János and Domján József. The gallery also offers museum education programmes: the “Alkoss Te is!” (You Create Too!) sessions welcome children to the museum and the cultural centre, while in the “Bőröndmúzeum” (Suitcase Museum) programme the gallery visits schools and hobby groups.
