About the museum
The Börtönmúzeum (Prison Museum) operates on the main street of Sátoraljaújhely, in the building of the former court palace, next to today’s Sátoraljaújhelyi Fegyház és Börtön (Sátoraljaújhely Penitentiary and Prison). The exhibition presents the historical and professional development of the prison service, the Hungarian penal systems and the situation of those serving their sentences.
Visitors can learn about retaliatory, corporal and capital punishments, the emergence and transformation of imprisonment, and the current system, with the life, education, employment and art of prisoners. The digital material is contained in a data bank, which researchers can use.
The museum offers basic museum education sessions to students of educational institutions, and the institution’s teachers and psychologist can also hold an extraordinary class-tutor lesson.
