About the museum
The valley-closing walls protecting the Visegrád upper castle and the large residential tower were built in the middle of the 13th century. In the time of I. Károly the hexagonal tower was converted into a royal residence, and the inner castle wall was built around it at that time. From 1490 the upper castle came under the control of the crown guard, and the residential tower was used as a storehouse. In 1540 soldiers of I. Ferdinánd demolished the southern corner of the tower.
After the Turkish wars, the abandoned ruin was first excavated by Henszlmann Imre in 1871; Schulek Frigyes designed the restoration, but for lack of funds the work was interrupted and only continued in the 1920s. The present form of the tower is the result of a modernist restoration carried out between 1959 and 1964 to plans by Sedlmayr János. Its name comes from King Salamon's captivity in the 11th century.
The residential tower now houses the exhibitions of the Mátyás Király Múzeum of the Hungarian National Museum: the Gothic fountain of the royal palace of Visegrád, King Mátyás's sculpture workshop in Visegrád, and the history of Visegrád. The tower is open to visitors during the season; it has been closed since 1 September 2026, and reopening is expected in spring 2027.
