About the museum
Szőnyi István (1894–1960), an outstanding figure of 20th-century Hungarian painting, lived and worked in Zebegény from 1924 until his death. His art reached its full maturity here; his painting was inspired by the landscape around the village and by the people who lived there. His former house and studio have been a memorial museum since 1967.
The house is not a museum in the traditional sense: its founders wanted to preserve Szőnyi's works, and the surroundings in which they were created, as faithfully as possible. Visitors can step among the studio's otherwise closed relics and see the paintings where they were made.
The permanent exhibition in the first three rooms and the studio gives a cross-section of the painter's oeuvre, with one significant work from each period, such as “Kerti pad”, “Reggel”, “Este Zebegényben” or “A falu ősszel”. Temporary exhibitions also present his graphic oeuvre and the artists of the Zebegény artists' colony.
