About the museum
The excavation of the castle of Visegrád began in the 1870s; the finds of the excavations then went to the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum (Hungarian National Museum). In 1927 the Visegrádi Várbizottság (Visegrád Castle Committee) was set up, which made the protection of the castle ruins its task. Later excavations also uncovered the remains of the royal palace.
The new palace was a regular building with a floor plan of 123 × 123 metres; in the middle of its street façade stood a gate tower, and beside it were a kitchen, storerooms and great halls; its first courtyard was a large reception court. The building was one of the most important venues of the medieval Hungarian royal court.
The site that is open to visitors presents the history of the palace, the Mátyás-era interiors and the Anjou- and Mátyás-era stone collection; the palace garden can also be visited. In 2026 the museum commemorates the 700th anniversary of the birth of I. (Nagy) Lajos király, who was born in Visegrád.
