Underground mining museum in Salgótarján: the history of Nógrád coal mining in the galleries of the József sloping shaft, with an open-air mining-machinery museum outside.

Opening hoursAdmission HUF 4,000

About the museum

The Bányászati Kiállítóhely is located in the mining colony area of Salgótarján, on the eastern edge of Veremoldal. The József sloping shaft worked the lower bench of the Nógrád coal basin from 1937 to 1951; the remaining upper-level galleries then continued to operate as a mine-rescue training gallery. During the work begun in the early 1960s, some of the galleries were converted for museum display, and on 30 April 1965 Hungary’s first underground mining museum opened, the second natural underground mining museum in Europe. In 1980 it was declared an industrial monument.

After the closure of the Nógrád coal mines in 1992, the museum was taken over by the Nógrád County Council; today it is maintained by Salgótarján, the county-righted city. The underground exhibition was renewed in 2005, and the surface permanent exhibition was modernised in 2018 and supplemented with interactive elements. Visitors can follow the mining process in a gallery system of about 290 metres, from pick hewing through drill-and-blast work and pneumatic hammer mining to cutter-drum face mining, while on the surface an open-air mining-machinery museum and the exhibition “A nógrádi szénbányászat története 1848–1992” (The History of Nógrád Coal Mining 1848–1992) await them.
