About the museum
Plans for a castle museum in Fiľakovo were already being considered in 1941, but the war interrupted the idea. The first regional museum of the Slovak part of Novohrad was established in Fiľakovo in 1951 as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum (District Local History Museum) and later became the Mestské múzeum (Municipal Museum). After several changes and the relocation of collections to Lučenec, the town again had its own collections in 1993, and the new Mestské múzeum opened an exhibition in 1994.
The idea of a castle museum returned to the town's development plans in 2005. In 2006–2007 the interior of the Bebek Bastion was adapted for museum purposes, and in April 2007 the Hradné múzeum vo Fiľakove was established and entrusted with the administration of Fiľakovo Castle. In August 2008 it opened, in the three lower floors of the five-storey bastion, the permanent exhibition Stáročia fiľakovského hradu (Centuries of Fiľakovo Castle) on the history of the town and the castle from the first written mention until the castle's destruction in 1682. Medieval and early modern finds are on display, together with the original keys of the castle and objects from the 39-year Turkish occupation.
In 2011 and 2017 a palaeontological exhibition, Pamiatky skamenelého života v okolí Fiľakova (Monuments of Fossil Life around Fiľakovo), was added and other exhibitions were renewed. In 2018 the museum opened two underground passages carved into the rock below the castle, with the exhibition Fiľakovo 1938–1945 on events of the Second World War. The Mestské vlastivedné múzeum in the Vigadó building also belongs to the Hradné múzeum, and short-term exhibitions are held on the top floor of the bastion.
