About the museum
The Mestské vlastivedné múzeum vo Fiľakove has been housed in the building of the local assembly hall, the Vigadó, since 1994. The building dates from 1900 and from 1940 served as a civic (burgher) school. The first exhibition opened in August 1994 during the local culture days; after closure in summer 2008 and an extensive reconstruction of the building in 2010–2011, supported by the European Union, a new permanent exhibition opened in 2014.
The museum is now a department of the Hradné múzeum vo Fiľakove. For the new exhibition, the Hradné múzeum prepared eight successful projects between 2008 and 2014 for the purchase of exhibits, the restoration of objects and their safe presentation. During the installation, the collections were also supplemented by objects from the Novohradské múzeum a galéria in Lučenec and by rare old objects from the local Franciscan monastery.
The exhibition Od fiľakovskej palmy k svetoznámemu kohútovi follows the history of the town from the destruction of the castle in 1682 to the sixties of the 20th century. It presents relics of the local nobility and craftsmen, the folk art of the Palóc people and the multi-ethnic character of the region. A separate room is devoted to the local enamel works, whose products bearing the protected rooster trademark were exported to four continents.
