About the museum
Museum activity in Sátoraljaújhely is based on the collecting work of the deputy county administrator Dókus Gyula. Dókus had been collecting antiquities since the turn of the century, and in his will of 1928 he bequeathed his material to the county. The Zemplén County Museum found a home in the new wing of the county hall in 1930.
Today’s museum is housed in one of the most beautiful historic-monument-type buildings in Sátoraljaújhely. Its Classicist main façade was completed in 1827; the building was first the manor of the Sennyey family, from 1834 to 1850 the seat of the Zemplén Casino Society, and from 1894 the town hall. After 1950 it housed a primary school with Slovak as the language of instruction, and it was converted into a museum during the renovation. A plaque on its wall recalls Petőfi Sándor’s visit and commemorates the natural scientist Balásházy János.
Today the Kazinczy Ferenc Múzeum is a branch institution of the Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum (Petőfi Literary Museum). Its permanent exhibitions present the history of the town and the Zemplén region, the archaeological research on the Várhegy and the natural values of the Zemplén landscapes. The exhibitions Erdőjárók kalauza (Guide for Forest Walkers) and Újhely és a Nagy Háború (Újhely and the Great War) have won professional recognition.
