About the museum

The Püspöki Palota in Sümeg is a complex of buildings nestling into the side of the Várhegy (Castle Hill); it is first mentioned in 1675, and its builder was ifj. Sennyei István, bishop of Veszprém. After an extension around 1700, Padányi Bíró Márton, bishop of Veszprém and one of the leading figures of the Hungarian Catholic Church in the 18th century, had the present baroque palace built from 1749 onwards.

The exhibition “Mennyei ügyek” (“Heavenly Matters”), opened after three years of restoration, presents the bishop’s story and the world of the palace and parish church he had built. Following the church frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, the exhibition shows the workshop secrets of baroque and rococo painting and works with holographic projections, video mapping and interactive games. On the ground floor of the south wing, in rooms furnished with antique furniture, paintings from the Városi Képtár (Municipal Gallery), and Herend and Zsolnay porcelain are on display.
