About the museum

The Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate bought the previously neglected mill building in January 2000 within a Hungarian–Swiss cooperation. With the support of the Környezetvédelmi és Vízügyi Minisztérium (Ministry of Environment and Water Affairs) the building was renovated in 2003, and in 2004, from a Széchenyi Plan tender with HUF 43 million in support, the presentation venue was set up.

In the wheel house a 390-centimetre-diameter overshot water wheel can be seen, which is still demonstrated in operation, driven by water. In the mill building there are a hand drill with a flywheel, a flour mixer, a two-operation diesel engine, a weighing scale, a Ganz grain roller mill and transmission gears. Milling relics and a gift shop await visitors. The mill lies in Zalaszántó, in the Szántó Basin, where the Keszthely Hills, the Southern Bakony and the basalt volcanic area of the Balaton Uplands meet.
