About the museum
The Tolnay Klári Emlékház preserves the memory of the twice Kossuth Prize-winning actress in Mohora, near the village’s former family manor house where the artist spent her childhood. The foundations of the life’s-work exhibition were laid by Balla István, leatherwork applied artist, for Tolnay Klári’s 80th birthday. The collection first opened in the gallery of the Várszínház (Castle Theatre) in Buda and then toured the country between 1994 and 1999.
In 2000 Balla István founded the Tolnay Klári Kulturális és Művészeti Egyesület (Tolnay Klári Cultural and Arts Association), which established and maintains the memorial house in Mohora. The building was inaugurated by President Mádl Ferenc. In 2008 the association founded the Tolnay Klári Cultural Award and, in 2014, on the actress’s hundredth birthday, the Tolnay Klári Art Award.
The permanent exhibition is built around more than four hundred photographs, personal objects, family memorabilia and costumes that evoke famous stage roles. Here the actress’s most valued honours can also be seen, including her two Kossuth Prizes. Visitors can step into a furnished dressing room, which evokes the intimate atmosphere of the theatre. Further exhibitions are temporarily shown in the memorial house’s gallery and in the Pásztor Erzsi Szalon.
