About the museum
Madách Imre lived in the manor house in Csesztve from December 1844 to September 1853. His children were born here, and here his first happy period of marriage to his wife, Fráter Erzsébet, took place. During this time Madách took an active part in the political life of Nógrád, including the War of Independence of 1848. In August 1862 the manor house received Arany János, the discoverer of Az ember tragédiája.
The building, which is under national heritage protection, has housed a museum since 1964, and its park is a nature conservation area. The permanent exhibition, renewed in 2012, follows the history of the Madách family, evokes the period and gives a comprehensive picture of the poet’s life and art; at its centre stand Az ember tragédiája and its significance in world literature and on the stage. The exhibition shows authentic documents, Madách’s personal furniture and cradle, and the editions and illustrations of the work. Interactive tools also help the visit: scenes from the drama can be performed in period costume on the mini stage, and the audio tour is free to use.
