About the museum
The Völgységi Múzeum opened in Bonyhád as a regional museum on 1 April 1987. Since then it has organised several hundred exhibitions and keeps more than ten thousand objects from the heritage and memories of the Völgység. The main building of the museum is a late-Baroque, classicist, two-storey residential house on Szabadság tér, built by the Nunkovits family at the end of the 18th century; the family coat of arms can still be seen on its façade. After nationalisation it was used as a residential building, and then the museum moved in.
The permanent exhibition, “Ház és ember a Völgységben” (House and People in the Völgység), presents the region’s past from its medieval antecedents to the modern age, its industry (viticulture, printing works, an enamel factory, a shoe factory) and its population (Hungarians, Germans, Bukovina Székelys, Hungarians from Upper Hungary). The Fire Museum stands on the same site as the main building and presents the early fire protection of the guilds and of the firefighters operating in the settlements.
Further exhibition sites belong to the museum: the Perczel Memorial Room, the Óvoda Múzeum (Kindergarten Museum) and the Ermel–Vojnits Mausoleum. The museum is the professional partner of the Wosinsky Mór Múzeum in Szekszárd and the Janus Pannonius Múzeum in Pécs.
