About the museum
The history of the Szászvár castle goes back to the 14th century. Its key figure is Alsáni Bálint, the twentieth bishop of Pécs (1374–1408), during whose episcopacy the Chapel of St John the Baptist was founded and the manor house forming the basis of today’s castle was built. Two storeys were built over the cellar, which is divided into two rooms: on the ground floor there is a vaulted storeroom and a kitchen, and on the upper floor a room and a dining room.
Over the centuries the former border castle was extended several times, fell into Turkish hands, burned down several times and was once blown up. The building complex, more than a thousand square metres in total, has been renovated and now houses several exhibitions.
The exhibitions present the characteristics of medieval Hungarian high-clerical courts and the historical and artistic world of the Bishopric of Pécs. Visitors can also try on a monastic habit, a coat of mail, a helmet or a bishop’s reverenda. The exhibition includes two rooms on medieval heresy and witchcraft. From the tower, the reconstruction supplemented with modern glass elements is clearly visible, and a small maze can be walked among the excavated walls.
