About the museum
The Zichy manor house in Zala was begun in the 1790s and was gradually extended. The parents and the brother of the painter Zichy Mihály lived in this house, and after the artist returned from Russia, his four children and his wife also settled here. They mainly lived here in summer and moved to the capital in winter. Servants’ houses, a stable and a coach house were built beside the manor.
The exhibition opened in 1979 and, after renovation and rearrangement, was handed over in 1992 by President Göncz Árpád. The descendants of Zichy Mihály played a major role in preserving the collection. The exhibition presents the artist’s works from Vienna and Paris, twenty illustrations made for Az ember tragédiája (The Tragedy of Man), the Faust pictures, the library of the Zichy family (around four thousand volumes), the Georgian room with a coffered ceiling, and the furniture of the St Petersburg studio. The main work, The Triumph of the Genius of Destruction, is in the studio; the Siberian child-shaman costume from the artist’s ethnographic collection is a special piece, unique in the country. Today it operates as a memorial house of the Hungarian National Gallery.
