About the museum
Davíðshús was built in 1944 by the poet Davíð Stefánsson from Fagraskógur (1895–1964), who lived there until his death. Davíð published his first poetry collection, Svartar fjaðrir (Black Feathers), in 1919 and is one of the nation's best-loved poets of the 20th century; he wrote ten poetry collections, four plays, one novel and a volume of essays.
After the poet's death, the town of Akureyri bought his library, his heirs donated personal items and the house's furnishings, and a national fundraising campaign was held to buy Bjarkarstígur 6, which was handed over to the town for care. The home of Davíð was made a museum in 1965. His library was one of the most important private book collections in the country, with rare prints and manuscripts.
The house is preserved as the poet left it in 1964, full of books, manuscripts, artworks and personal belongings. Among the works are pieces by Kjarval, Sölvi Helgason, Ásgrímur Jónsson, Kristín Jónsdóttir and Muggur. The Minjasafnið á Akureyri (Akureyri Heritage Museum) runs the house, and visitors are guided through it.
