About the museum

The Akureyri Museum (Minjasafnið á Akureyri) is the regional and local heritage museum of Eyjafjörður. The idea for the museum emerged in 1949, and in 1952 an agreement was signed between KEA, Akureyri Town and Eyjafjörður County. The house at Aðalstræti 58 was bought in 1962, and the museum opened on 17 July 1963. It is an independent foundation run by Akureyri Town, and five municipalities around Eyjafjörður contribute funds to its operation.

The main exhibitions are in Kirkjuhvoll, a three-storey residential house from 1934, and in exhibition halls built next to the house in 1978. The collection consists of cultural-historical relics of everyday life and industries in Eyjafjörður. The museum has permanent exhibitions on the history of the region and of Akureyri, and short-term exhibitions on various themes.

The largest object in the collection is a black-tarred timber church built by Þorsteinn Daníelsson in 1846. It originally stood at Svalbarð east of Eyjafjörður but now stands by the museum garden. The garden is one of the few surviving ornamental gardens in Iceland from around 1900. The museum also runs Nonnahús and is connected to Davíðshús, Laufás and other museums in Eyjafjörður.
